They will celebrate the liturgical memory of Blessed Mama Antula, brave missionary from Argentina

Argentina, homeland of María Antonia de Paz y Figueroa known as Beata Mama Antula, prepares the celebrations for a new anniversary of her death on March 7.

In Villa Silípica, Diocese of Santiago del Estero, they will carry out celebratory activities in honor of the diocesan patron saint, under the motto “Mama Antula, lay woman and missionary at the service of God and the poor”.

In addition to encouraging the pilgrimage of an image of Mama Antula during February, the novena dedicated in her honor began on March 3 and will run until Saturday the 12th, at the Villa Silípica sanctuary.

On Monday the 7th, the liturgical feast of the blessed, there will be a pilgrimage that will leave at 6:00 pm from the grotto of Mama Antula located in the Simbol.

Once in the sanctuary, Mass and baptisms will be celebrated starting at 8:00 pm The day will end with a serenade.

On Saturday the 12th, the activity “El camino de Mama Antula” will take place, which consists of a pilgrimage at 6:00 pm from the sanctuary to the temple in Villa Silípica. There will be a celebration of light and then there will be a community dinner.

On Sunday the 13th there will be a big party organized by the chapel of Montserrat. At 8 am breakfast will be shared and then the Rosary will be prayed.

At 10:00 am a procession accompanied by local artists and horsemen will begin to give way to the Eucharist from 11:00 am At 1:00 pm there will be an artistic show.

Meanwhile, the Holy House of Spiritual Exercises, founded by the Blessed in Buenos Aires, will hold a celebration on March 7.

From the large chapel, at 4:30 pm the relics of Mama Antula will be exhibited and a talk will be given on her personality and evangelizing mission.

Then there will be a moment of prayer and at 5:45 pm there will be a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy with the aim of visiting the national historic tomb, where the remains of Mama Antula rest.

In the place, the Holy Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 pm presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires, Msgr. Ernesto Giobando.

Mama Antula, missionary of the Gospel

María Antonia de Paz y Figueroa was born in 1730 in Santiago del Estero. She worked from a very young age with the Jesuits collaborating in the organization of spiritual exercises. She then went to Buenos Aires, where for 20 years she preached the Gospel.

In 1795 he founded the Holy House of Spiritual Exercises in Buenos Aires, which still fulfills its mission under the care of the Daughters of the Divine Savior congregation. He passed away on March 7, 1799 at that residence. His remains rest in the Nuestra Señora de la Piedad church in Buenos Aires.

On August 26, 2016, María Antonia de Paz y Figueroa was beatified by the delegate of Pope Francis and prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato.

After several investigations, a book has been published that highlights Mama Antula as “the most rebellious woman of her time”, due to the legacy she left in the then Viceroyalty of Peru and later Viceroyalty of La Plata, said Nuncia Locatelli one of the authors of the book published in September 2019.
