SPOILERS beware!
*This article contains spoilers for the ending of ‘Sonic 2: The Movie’.
The fastest blue hedgehog in the world has already returned to movie theaters, and he is super well accompanied. In ‘Sonic 2: The Movie’ we not only meet Sonic and Jim Carrey’s Doctor Robotnik, we also welcome Tails and Knuckles on the big screen. The film directed by Jeff Fowler aims to match the surprising success of the first installment, and hopefully it will succeed because in it we can already see that there are future plans for the characters. Do not continue reading if you have not seen the movie yet, just know that it does have a post-credits scene.
If you’re still here, we’re going to break down what this means for a possible third adventure for Sonic and the others. As we see at the end of ‘Sonic 2’, the hedgehog uses the power of chaos emeralds to become Super Sonic and finish off Robotnik’s giant robot. In the post-credits scene we see the GUN agents examining the remains of the robot. They tell us that while they were erasing Robotnik from the database, they found a 50-year-old file with coordinates that direct them to a laboratory where Project Shadow was being concocted. A creature that looks like a dark-haired hedgehog closes the scene by opening eyes filled with red electricity.
“Project Shadow” and that new hedgehog further the introduction of Shadow, one of the video game franchise’s most beloved villains since making his appearance in 2001’s “Sonic Adventure 2” for the Dreamcast. In the games, Shadow is a creation of Robotnik’s grandfather, and has abilities very similar to Sonic’s.
At the moment, Paramount Pictures has not confirmed that there will be a ‘Sonic 3: The movie’. The criticism has been quite in line with the first part, which managed to raise almost 320 million dollars worldwide despite having come face to face with the start of the pandemic. In Spain, on the day of its premiere, ‘Sonic 2’ ranked second, surpassed by ‘Morbius’, according to data from ComScore. It will be released in the United States on April 8.
