The 5th and final installment in the series and made alongside Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is all set to release soon and fans of the franchise are excited.
The movies are based on Nobuhiro Watsuki’s manga series by the same name. The historical fiction is set during the early Meiji period in Japan. It tells the story of Himura Kenshin, a lone wanderer, who used to be an infamous assassin named Hitokiri Battosai.
After fighting in the Bakumatsu war, Kenshin travels along Japan’s countryside, and protects and helps those in need as a way to seek redemption for the lives he once took.
Release Date and Cast
Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is releasing globally on Netflix the coming Friday, i.e. July 30, 2021. The fourth film in the series, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, was in theaters on April 23, 2021.
Takeru Satoh will return as the protagonist Kenshin. While many other characters will return as well, there will be some new character introductions to the story too. Issey Takahashi will play Katsura Kogoro, the mentor of young Kenshin. Nijiro Murakami will portray Okita Soji, the first Shinsengumi’s very first captain, who had gone against Kenshin. Masanobu Andou will be seen as Takasugi Shinsaku, the samurai who contributed to the restoration of Meiji, and Katsura Kogoro’s best friend, who was against recruiting young Kenshin to be assassin Hitokiri Battousai.
The movie will serve as a prequel to the other movies in the franchise and will show the making of Kenshin into the deadly assassin Hitokiri towards the end of Bakumatsu. We will get to see how Kenshin gets his cross-shaped scar.
Yukishiro Tomoe (played by Kasumi Arimura) and Kenshin’s relationship will be explored too. However, we won’t see the Kenshin we’re used to, since the events that shaped and changed him haven’t yet happened in the time that the movie is set in.
A franchise’s final installment is always looked upon with hopes and expectations. Considering the good reception of earlier movies, Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning has a pretty high bar to achieve.
