On the morning of this Wednesday, July 13, the Holy See reported the appointment of 3 women in the Dicastery for Bishops.

It’s about the sister Raffaella PetriniSecretary General of the Governorate of the Vatican City State; Yvonne Reungoat, former Superior General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians; and the doctor Maria Lia Zervinopresident of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations.

is the first time that 3 women are appointed in the committee to elect bishopssomething that Pope Francis already reported on July 6 in an interview with Reuters.

In the July 2 interview at the Vatican, Pope Francis did not identify the women or say when their appointments would be officially announced. Instead he said he was “open to giving (women) a chance” and wanted to open things up “a little bit”.

Just 11 days later, the Holy See has made these appointments official, which add one more to those that the Pope had previously reported.

It is noteworthy that the Congregation for Bishops recently changed its name to the Dicastery for Bishops, in line with the new constitution that underpins Pope Francis’ reform of the Vatican.

The new constitution, entitled Praedicate Evangelium (Preach the Gospel), states thate any member of the faithful can also direct a Vatican dicastery or other organizations“given its particular competence, power of government and function”.
