The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima (Portugal) announced that it will send a pilgrim image of the Virgin to Ukraine so that Catholics can pray and ask for the intercession of the Mother of God for peace in the country.

The image of Our Lady of Fatima will arrive in Ukraine in response to the request of the Greek-Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Lviv, Msgr. Ihor Vozniak.

“We ask that you send us the image of the Pilgrim Virgin of Fatima to Ukraine so that we can pray for its protection so that peace returns to the country,” Msgr. Vozniak told the Shrine in a March 10 request.

The next day, the Shrine responded to the request and expressed its closeness to the Ukrainians in these difficult times. We are “united in the same spirit of prayer, it is with great pleasure,” he indicated.

In addition, he pointed out that it is the first time that the pilgrim image of the Virgin of Fatima will visit Ukraine and will remain in the country for a month.

The image will depart from Lisbon (Portugal) to Krakow (Poland), and will then be transported by the Greek-Catholic community of Lviv to the Ukraine.

On March 11, the rector of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, Fr. Carlos Cabecinhas, celebrated Mass in the Basilica of the Holy Trinity, where he insisted on the need to pray for peace in Ukraine, especially during the visit of the pilgrim image of the Virgin of Fatima to the European country.

“Our Lady here in Fatima insistently asked us to pray for peace; it is this prayer that we pray here daily that will be present in the prayer of all Ukrainians before the image of the Pilgrim Virgin of Fatima”, she indicated.

The sculpture that will be sent to Ukraine is number 13, the last replica of the original image or number 1, which was designed according to the instructions of the Servant of God Sister Lucia de Jesus, one of the three little shepherds to whom the image appeared. Virgin of Fatima in 1917.

The original image of the Virgin of Fatima was solemnly crowned by the Archbishop of Évora on May 13, 1947. Since then it has visited 64 countries.

In 2000, the original pilgrim image was placed in the exhibition “Fátima Luz y Paz”, in the Portuguese sanctuary; and on December 8, 2003, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the image was enthroned in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima.

The statue then only left the basilica in exceptional situations, the last time being for the 2019 World Youth Day (WYD) in Panama.

The Shrine noted that in addition to sending the pilgrim image to Ukraine, this week it will receive a group of 35 Ukrainian refugees, most of them women and children.

The refugees will be received in response to the request of the Municipality of Ourém and the Portuguese Greek-Catholic community, whose spiritual assistants reside and collaborate in the Sanctuary of Fatima, he specified.

The reception will be temporary and work will be done with the local authorities so that these families have a more stable situation in the country, with access to documentation, schooling, health and employment.
