How can you protect your children from pornography in 2022?

Children and adolescents are exposed to pornography from any technological device and, therefore, Catholic parents should know some tools to prevent their children from consuming this harmful content, which the Church condemns as a serious offense.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church warns that pornography “offends chastity because it distorts the purpose of the sexual act. It seriously undermines the dignity of those who dedicate themselves to it (actors, merchants, the public), since each one becomes an object of rudimentary pleasure and illicit profit for another. It introduces some and others in the illusion of a fictional world. It is a serious fault. The civil authorities must prevent the production and distribution of pornographic material.”

This list, compiled by the National Catholic Register, contains two key ideas for parents to protect their children from exposure to pornography.

1. Use of filters on the Internet

Since the majority of digital devices used by children are portable (laptops, smartphones and tablets), parents should consider the use of Internet filters and phones.

Some of them are: Bark, Boomerang, mSpy, Kaspersky Safe Kids, FamilyTime, Qustodio, K9Webprotection.com, Norton, McAfee, and Eyezy.

2. Discuss the existence and dangers of pornography with children

Parents need to have this conversation with their kids, just like they do when it comes to drugs and alcohol.

Children need to know, in an age-appropriate way, that such images can lead them away from God’s plan for married love and that pornography is not an accurate representation of sex.

When your child gains access to a digital device, whether it’s yours, a friend’s or school’s, it’s time to start the conversation.

To learn what this conversation should be like, parents are recommended to read literature on the subject.

The Educate Empower Kids organization, for example, has published a book called “How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography,” which recommends that parents begin by explaining what pornography is.

Simpler definitions suggested by this book, which may work for young children, include these: “Pornography is images or videos of people with little or no clothing” and “Online pornography generally shows videos of people having sex.” .

Another book to consider for young children is Good Pictures, Bad Pictures: Protecting Young Children from Pornography. It’s a read-aloud book about a mother and father teaching their son what pornography is, why it’s dangerous, and how to reject it.
