Bishop Piotr Greger, president of the Commission for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments of the Polish Episcopal Conference, recalled that with Palm Sunday this April 10, Holy Week begins, which brings salvation to the whole world. .

“We are going not only to be passive observers of the events, but also to actively participate in them. These are saving events for us. Jesus undertakes these actions for us and for us, in order to reconcile us sinners with the Father”, said the Prelate according to the website of the Polish Episcopate.

On Palm Sunday, the Bishop stressed, “we entered Jerusalem with Jesus to participate in the major events in salvation history”.

The Polish Prelate explained that on Holy Thursday, the first day of the Easter Triduum, “the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated, within the framework of the mystery of Christ crucified. On the second day, Good Friday, and through the liturgy of the Passion –because the Church does not celebrate the Eucharist on that day– we are before the mystery of the buried Christ. Finally, on Holy Saturday the most important liturgy of the year, the Easter Vigil, shows the mystery of the Risen Christ”.

The Bishop explained that “the Easter Triduum is a great liturgy that takes place in three acts: “On Thursday we will hear a call to the commandment of love. This is the testament of Jesus in the Cenacle, which we will present in the rite of the Mandatum, or washing of the feet”.

“Jesus seals all his public activity by showing what it means to be head of the Church. This is the evening when Jesus teaches the Church selfless service.”

Making a brief reference to the war generated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Prelate said that “this year, when we are dealing with events beyond our eastern border, this dimension of the commandment of love takes on a special meaning.”

“On Good Friday, the adoration of the Cross is at the center of the liturgy of the Passion. This is a special moment in which we experience the unlimited love of God, thanks to which the salvation of the world has been achieved.”

“Salvation came through love, and the Cross of Christ is unquestionable proof and confirmation of this love,” he added.

The Bishop stressed that the Easter Vigil, on Holy Saturday “is a liturgy in which we will participate by renewing our baptismal vows at a time that will return us to our Christian identity. This liturgy asks us to reach for the baptismal font.”

“In Baptism, we were cleansed from the original sin with which we came into this world. This is our dying to come out of the grave together with Christ as conquerors to a new life”, he expressed.
