The premise of the show is set in 866 when England was divided into seven kingdoms. The Vikings captured York and other Anglo-Saxon lands are consequently attacked and ruled by them. Lastly, only the Kingdom of Wessex is left behind. The four seasons cover the story for about 40-45 years.

Cast and What to Expect From The Last Kingdom Season 5
There are no confirmed details about who is returning for the fifth season. But it is for sure the prime members are going to reprise their roles. The cast mainly contains Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, Adrian Schiller as Bethlehem. However, we are not sure if we will see Eliza Butterworth as Aelswith as she was poised by Adrian Schiller’s Bethlehem.
There are few theories surrounding the death of the protagonist played by Alexander Dreymon in the coming season. It is anticipated that Uhtred will realize that he is not just bound to Bebbanburg. Furthermore, his destiny is tied up to England as a whole. He probably has to face his greatest enemy of all time and has to suffer a great loss too. We might also get to see the union of the kingdoms.
The show will be an adaptation of the given novel series. Thus it is sure to unpack the events from books no. 9 and 10.
