While the coronavirus outbreak started small in Wuhan, it didn’t take long to put the whole world into chaos. COVID-19 has spread out all over the world; in fact, no one seems safe at the moment. And with that same effective lockdowns, halts in the film industry and work from home.
But how exactly can actors work from home? There’s your answer; they can’t. Moreover, the outbreak has also majorly affected the global economy, almost bringing it to a standstill. All businesses expect the essential ones are on hold.
The film’s crew are left without any income
Of course, this seems to affect every individual’s financial situation at the moment. And just like everyone else, the people working in the film industry are suffering too. This includes actors, on-set crew, etc.
We all know that the films with pending releases have all been postponed. While some of them will not get dates almost a year away, others might not get one at all. Besides, theatres have also shut their doors for now. All in all, it’s a scary situation which no one expected.
Furthermore, big movie productions, as well as all TV show filming, are on hold as well. And now, the crew signed up for these shows and movies and suffering, way more than you can imagine.
The crew members remain dependent on the income from these shootings and now don’t have any work. And hence, the source of income to carry forward their household. Besides, the independent crew who work in Germany at the Studio Babelsberg are now desperate. And they’ve decided to seek help from the studio.
German Government has introduced relief programs
Matrix 4, the majorly awaited film, appeared all set to move shooting from San Francisco to Germany at Studio Babelsberg. However, suddenly because of the situation, it all shut down. And since no production took place, the temporary employment agreements with the crew members were canceled. Moreover, they have now made a stand, all coming together under a group, “Wir sind Babelsberg (We Are Babelsberg).”
The crew members are asking the German Government along with the studio for help. However, because of the financing structure of Matrix 4, the Government won’t be able to help them. The film had, as of now, only applied for German tax credits. Since shooting hadn’t stated, they didn’t ask for the funding grants yet. However, some other relief programs of the German Government will help these crew members, hopefully.
