Married former teachers have been arrested this Tuesday for both of them having a sexual relationship with the same teenager. Nick and Ruth Baggetta were convicted in June of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl.
The husband was sentenced to four and a half to nine years in prison plus probation. The wife was sentenced to two and a half to six years plus probation. Ruth Baggetta was taken into custody while her baby watched. Earlier, she was on home confinement so she could be with her baby girl. Stay tuned to find out more details about the ongoing investigation and the arrests made.
The institutional sexual assault
The married teachers were found guilty in June of 2019 of all the charges against them, including institutional sexual assault. They had a nearly two-year sexual relationship the Baggettas had with a 16-year-old girl. At the time, Ruth was a band director at Lakeland High School. Her husband was a teacher at Fell Charter School near Carbondale.
The victim was in the courtroom and is now 19 years old. The girl will be scarred for the rest of her life, as the Judge rightly said in court. Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell said it sends a clear message to anybody that’s entrusted with the welfare of children. The news is that if they breach that trust, they’re going to be held accountable.
Baggettas maintained their innocence
During the sentencing, the Baggettas maintained their innocence. They tried to help the girl who had confided in them about problems she was having at home. Ruth told the judge that they should never have allowed her into their lives. They thought that they were only helping her as teachers. It was only later that they realized that they were opening themselves up to this situation, Ruth said.
Nick said that they only meant the best. They did not say or do anything to upset the girl, he said. The parents of both Nick and Ruth begged the judge to allow the pair to raise their daughter as a family. They painted a picture of a caring and compassionate couple. They even said that this couple went above and beyond to help their students.
