Erramatti Mangayamma, a 73-year-old woman, has given birth to twin girls in India. The farmer, from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, might just be the oldest person ever to give birth. She might break the record of Daljinder Kaur, another Indian woman in her 70s, who delivered a boy in 2016. Mangayamma’s pregnancy was possible because of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). She delivered the babies via caesarian section on this Thursday. The family seemed to be extremely happy and the babies are doing well, too. Erramatti calls this the ‘happiest time’ of her life.
Stigmatized in their village
Mangayamma Yaramati and Sitarama Rajarao, her husband, 82, always wanted to be parents. However, the couple from Andhra Pradesh had never been able to conceive. This is the reason why they were stigmatized in their village, Erramatti told BBC Telugu. She added that she was always called the ‘childless lady’ in her community. They had tried numerous times and had consulted with several doctors over the years. No wonder that this is the happiest time in the couple’s life.
Treated by 3 groups of doctors
According to Shankar, his patient was cared for in a very ‘scientific’ way. She had three groups of doctors during the treatment. One group took care of her nutritional status and the other took care of her general health. The third group was solely focused on her pregnancy. All these areas of her health were monitored every single day.
Social disapproval and IVF
The mother of the twins had started menopause 25 years ago. There, an egg was taken from another donor. It was then fertilized with Rajarao’s sperm through IVF. She was found to be pregnant in January, luckily. This means that she conceived in the first cycle itself. The donor’s children were killed in a car accident. The doctor mentioned that donor’s of IVF usually come at a later stage. These women are usually of the age group of 40 to 50 years. There is social disapproval attached to not having children which continues to be a problem.
Elderly husband suffers stroke
Sitarama Rajarao, her husband, 82, suffered a stroke the day after his daughters were born. Before that, he had said that god had finally answered his prayers. He was asked about what will happen to his children if anything happened to the old couple. He said it’s all in the hands of god now. Whatever is bound to happen, always does, doesn’t it?
