Disney has recently announced the live-action remake of their 1989 cartoon adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid’. Actress Halley Berry congratulated her namesake, Halle Bailey on Twitter for bagging the role of Ariel in the movie. Although the casting of Ariel is confirmed, rumors have it that Lindsay Lohan and Zendaya were also contenders for the role. Currently, the struggle is on for the male lead of the movie.
In case you needed a reminder… Halles get it DONE. Congratulations @chloexhalle on this amazing opportunity, we can’t wait to see what you do! #TheLittleMermaid #HalleBailey pic.twitter.com/z0Rik2nxRe

Prince Harry or not?
One such rumor that floated was about casting of Harry Styles for the role of Prince Eric since late July of this year. AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas gave out breaking news on Twitter confirming the rumor on 13th August. Within hours, however, both of the tweets were deleted, crushing daydreams of millions of fans. A source close to the One Direction star, reportedly said that Harry is a big fan of the movie. But he had ‘respectfully’ denied taking up the role.
An Early Bird
The person who saw this news as an opportunity for the new venture was actor Christian Navarro. The actor, who plays the role of Tony Padilla in 13 Reasons Why, posted an interesting tweet on August 13. He commented upon Disney’s new initiative to include people of color and asked them to consider a Latino Prince who can sing. He tagged Disney Studios and Melissa McCarthy, who is in talks for the role of Ursula, in the tweet.
So I heard Harry Styles passed on Prince Eric, well…I can sing. Black Ariel/Latino Prince…no ones called but Season 3 drops next week and I think it’s one hell of an audition ??♂️@DisneyStudios @melissamccarthy

Catching the metaphorical worm
Navarro’s tweet blew up and it seems, he was able to catch Disney’s eyes. The star’s representatives got a call from Disney in the early hours of 4th September. He tweeted that his tapes are sent and fingers are crossed. It is apparent that Navarro is just as excited as his fans to bag the role.
Idk what happened to the other tweet.
But! @disney saw this, saw your support, and gave my team a call. They wanted to see what I could do. Tapes sent. Fingers crossed. Let’s make some history. #iloveyou3000 #PrinceEric #TheLittleMermaid https://t.co/192ZTsfqyH

Other rumored castings
Apart from Navarro, BTS fans seem to want an Asian Prince Eric. People have been nominating BTS star JIMIN for the role. Keeping up with Disney’s new initiative to include women, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community, a variety of faces have been cast. The casting of Halle Bailey was itself a beautiful step forward since the original movie had a Caucasian mermaid. Seasoned actor Javier Barden is in talks for the role of King Triton. Awkwafina of Crazy Rich Asians fame is said to have been cast for the role of Scuttle and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. The movie is scheduled to start shooting in 2020 and we might have to wait a little longer for the final cast.
