Plácido Domingo’s Appearance In Tokyo 2020 Doubtful, After Sexual Harassment Allegations By Several Women

Several women have opened up about their traumatic encounters with the Opera King. What does this lead to? José Plácido Domingo is a Spanish opera singer, conductor, and arts administrator. He is well known for his versatility. He performs in Italian, French, German, Spanish, English, and Russian in the most prestigious opera houses.

His accusers have pointed out a disturbing side of him. Eight singers and a dancer reported sexual harassment by The Spanish superstar. The incidents date back to the 1980s. These took place at high-end opera companies where Domingo held power. One accuser reported that the singer put his hand under her skirt. While three others have claimed that he gave them forceful wet kisses on their lips. Another accused him of unnecessarily touching her on business lunches. Yet another said that he continuously asked her out.

Domingo Presents His side

The singer went on to claim that none of the allegations were true. “The allegations from these unnamed individuals dating back as many as thirty years are deeply troubling, and as presented, inaccurate.”. He also said that any relationship he had was “welcoming and consensual”. However, he said it pained him to know that he might have made someone uncomfortable despite best intentions. Placido was planning to perform at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games event. He was going to give a performance with Ebizo Ichikawa to bring together opera and traditional Japanese theatre. However, the committee is unable to decide now.

Atlantic Divide On Me Too

The world is seeing a divide in this movement. Domingo’s US Tours stand canceled. However, the European counterparts are on schedule. He even received a Standing Ovation for his first performance after the allegations in Europe. This movement is not popular in Japan as of now. This is because Japanese society attaches a stigma to sexual harassment. Therefore victims don’t bring out their stories. However, the Tokyo committee has said that they are looking into the allegations. Therefore, Plácido’s performance remains undecided.

These allegations should not be  ignored. It’s not one but Nine women speaking out. Clearly, there is some substance here which is to be looked into.
