‘My Favorite Shapes’ by stand-up comedian and Saturday Night Live writer Julio Torres, premiered on HBO on August 10. The unique comedian made his debut stand-up special through this HBO show. The show was well received with many applauding Julio’s bizarre sense of humor.
A Square, Circle Or An Oval?
In his show, Julio observes and examines random objects through a conveyer belt as he is seated on his chair. The queer comedian is dressed in a metallic suit covered with silver body glitter, as he checks out different objects like a small cactus, crystals. And the small furniture. He takes a giant shoe and explains it to be a shelf for a bunch of miniature shoes.
It is a look into the brain of Julio who compares a piece of giant pink jewelry to be a girl from LA named Jessica who works in PR. In the end, Julio says that his least favorite shape is when someone tells him it is what it is. Hinting that he hates literalism. The show is an epitome of genius absurdity by the space comedian Julio.
The Creative Process of Julio
The HBO Spanish-language comedy ‘Los Espookys’ creator Julio explains some tips to reach his extraterrestrial level of comedy. He explains that if he ever experiences a writer’s block, he switches gear by working his brain in different ways. Moreover, he adds that if he doesn’t feel it then he would stop, saying, “If you don’t want to do that, you just can’t.”
He says that you need to focus on the work and not on the result, by “Just thinking first about things that stimulate you, and then not thinking about what could be the benefit”. Julio adds by saying that inspiration can come from anywhere, and his last inspiration came from the movie ‘High Life’. According to him, one can be creative by trusting their voice, not just their expectations.
Julio Torres is the right amount of strange, thoughtful, clever, witty and truly original. ‘My Favorite Shapes by Julio Torres’ is a whip-smart performance piece that is somewhere between stand-up and an art installation thing.
