Skylar lived in Star City, West Virginia was a student and also worked part-time at a fast-food restaurant.
Events of 6 July 2012
After coming back from work at Wendy’s on the 6th of July, Skylar sneaked out of her bedroom window to meet her two best friends, Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy. The CCTV cameras also captured Neese sneaking into a car at 12:30 AM. The three then drove off to Pennsylvania state border to smoke marijuana. When Neese went to fetch the lighter from the car, Rachel and Shelia started stabbing her.
Best friends to murderers?
The trio was inseparable for many years. In fact, Shelia Eddy and Neese had been best friends since they were eight. Neese’s father also told the media that Eddy was no less than a family. But when things started getting sour, Neese had a fall out with the other two girls. She was very pissed off at the two, as was apparent from her posts on Twitter. Rachel and Shelia had however managed to convince her to join them for the drive. According to reports, the two girls had been planning on the murder for months. On the day of the murder, they had brought with them a serial killer kit which consisted of knives, towels, shovels, bleach and new clothes. After killing Neese, the girls covered her body with branches and took her to a secluded area in the woods across the Pennsylvania border.
Girls sentenced to prison
After Neese went missing from her home, there was no clue about her for months. However, Shoaf admitted to the murder after a few months in December 2012. She also agreed to guide the authorities to Neese’s body. On being asked as to the reasons for the murder, Shoaf said that they didn’t like her. Shoaf was eventually tried as an adult. She received a sentence of 30 years in January 2014, with eligibility for parole in 10 years.
Eddy was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 15 years.
Eddy’s twitter posts
Eddy was pretty active on social media after Neese’s death. She behaved like nothing had happened and posted about TV, school, homework. Although at times she did a post about her missing friend, she almost always acted normal. On learning that Neese’s remains had been found, she pretended to be devasted and tweeted, “Rest easy Skylar, you’ll ALWAYS be my best friend,” with a photo montage of her and Neese together, and the words “worst day of my whole life.”
Both women are now 23 years old and remain incarcerated at the Lakin Correctional Center in West Virginia.
