Why did this happen?

Her royal highness, the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry unfollowed everyone on Instagram on 6th August to follow 15 coveted accounts. These were not friends and family but small organizations that according to them are “Forces for Change”. This comes after Meghan guest-edited British Vogue’s September issue that featured 15 distinguished women on its cover titled as forces for change. These women have been recognized for their work in the fields of mental health, LGBTQ rights, poverty, and diversity at a global level.

Following this move by Meghan, the royal couple took to Instagram and asked their followers to suggest the people organisations and causes that they found noteworthy. Then they selected Instagram accounts of 15 organisations out of the suggestions and followed them. These 15 accounts were of lesser-known organisations that work at the grass-root level for various causes from all around the globe.  The praised these organisations and said “These accounts showcase those persevering at the grassroots level, connecting our global community through a shared lens of giving back and helping one another. We were so happy to learn about them and are now able to share them with you!”

Who are these organisations?

The organisations included  These included Tiny Tickers Charity-a UK based organisation that helps detect heart diseases at a young age. Lion Guardians,an organisation based in Kenya that promotes harmonious living between humans and lions was also included. Moreover, Free Wheelchair Mission, a US-based organisation that provides free wheelchairs to those who can’t afford one was also titled as a “Force for change”. Next came Because, a Canadian workforce working to improve the staggering population of bees. Furthermore,
Rafiki Mwema, an Australian organization that’s builds safe houses for survivors of sexual abuse in Kenya ; Love for Oceans, a Mozambique based ocean and marine conservation organisation were also highlighted. Other selected organisation are, Beyond Blue, Art of Hope , Global Wellness Day, Earth Day Network, Children International, Plan International UK, Pawsitive Change Program, Waves for Change and Blink now Foundation.

What’s next

The Royal Couple has decided to keep these accounts in the ‘followed’ list for the month of August. Reportedly they may be choosing a different set of accounts next month too spread awareness about various causes.

Followers all around the told have praised the Royal Couple for this Initiative. Many people think that this may be a breakthrough for shedding light on organisations and people who are doing amazing work in their fields but lack recognition.
